As mentioned elsewhere, I've always had a passion for 2D shooters. I did actually wind up writing a prototype for a game I was eventually going to name 2198.
This prototype features a scrolling tiled background system, multiple animated weapon systems, and a single enemy type which comes and fires a single projectile at you. This projectile can hit and damage the player.
I modelled the player's ship in TurboCAD 3D (under Windows 95), rendered it, and imported it into E. The animated flames are simple pixel art created in the same, as are the various projectiles and the enemy ship. Note how the flames move closer when the ship tilts as the player moves sideways, to remain aligned with the ship's reactors.
